Nature’s Biggest Hit

The finch flies full from the feeder
Exuberance puffing its chest
With the song of life
Nature’s biggest hit for all to hear
Sung for millennia in fields and ponds
On mountains, deserts and under seas
Everything knows it’s alive
If even for the briefest moment
Fawns jump legs wound tight springs of joy
Amoebas wiggle and molecules realign
Across the seconds through millennia
Life bursts from every sidewalk crack
To every inch of every rainforest
Consciousness celebrates being
That swells in my heart
Knowing my days are now few
Grabbing every moment holding it dear
Afraid to let it go like a breath
The breath that is all we have
Greater only by volume than the sparrow’s
No choice but to exhale
Back into the blue orb
Who readies the next breath
