Only One Truth

There are no preparations
No arranging of affairs
The lights go out on their own terms
As we ride the wave of life
That crashes on us all
Some sooner than others
Inevitable as the dark that follows the light
Death doesn’t care about plans
We live so confident in our place
We are surprised when it comes
Taken aback about moving on
To the great nothingness
We all came from
Our only true home
Is nowhere and we are no one
Not even a memory
Every shred lost in timelessness
We have been given a gift
That we used as if it was
Of our own making
When the maker was just randomness
That we awoke to just in time
to die
All we can do is experience the ride
Without guarantee that it will be memorable
As death forgets everything
On the last exhale
Hopefully with a little grin
As we get the joke at the end
